The acronym initially stood for Training and Education of Autistic and Related Communication-handicapped Children, though it is not generally referred to by anything other than TEACCH or Structured TEACHHING now. The TEACCH approach was developed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, originating in a child research project begun in 1964 by Eric Schopler and Robert Reichler. The results of this pilot study indicated that the children involved made good progress, and consequently state finance supported the formation of Division TEACCH. The TEACCH program was developed by Eric Schopler in the late 1970s and is administered through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Connect Chapel Hill TEACCH provides diagnostic evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults who are thought to have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but have not yet received a diagnosis.
